Description
Remote and Continuous Monitoring of Rodent Temperature and Activity
To gain a comprehensive understanding of mouse phenotypes, it is essential to monitor animal behavior continuously and without external disturbances over extended periods. In addition to tracking activity, body temperature serves as a valuable physiological parameter for evaluation. Behavioral phenotyping requires ongoing, undisturbed observation in the animal’s natural home-cage environment. While video-based systems are commonly used for this purpose, allowing researchers to monitor remotely, they present significant challenges. These systems are expensive to implement, require considerable time and labor for video interpretation, and necessitate dedicated research staff. Moreover, accurately monitoring animals in group housing or during their most active periods—typically at night—can be particularly difficult.
The UID Mouse Matrix was specifically developed to overcome the challenges researchers face when evaluating mouse behavior. This RFID-enabled system allows for real-time recording and monitoring of location, locomotor activity, and body temperature for one or multiple animals within their home-cage environment. The comprehensive data generated by the system offers valuable insights into the health and behavior of each animal. For example, is the mouse huddling with the group? Does it spend more time near the feeder? Are some animals displaying higher levels of activity than others? Is the animal’s body temperature rising or falling? These are just a few of the questions that can be answered easily with the UID Mouse Matrix. Evaluations are conducted remotely and in real-time, even in the dark during nighttime activity, all without disturbing the animals or requiring the presence of lab personnel.
Create Your Own Smart Cage for Undisturbed Monitoring of Home-cage Activity
Simply implant the UID Temperature or standard ID microchip into the animals and return them to their cage. Next, position the UID Mouse Matrix reader plate beneath the cage for continuous, 24/7 monitoring of the animals’ location, movement, and temperature—completely undisturbed. The UID Mouse Matrix reader plate can be adapted to any cage, transforming it into a Smart Cage for round-the-clock activity tracking. Additionally, we are collaborating with several caging manufacturers to develop fully integrated Rodent Smart Cages, equipped with UID’s RFID tracking technology, for seamless and advanced monitoring.
