Fordham and Columbia Researchers Take Rat Research Outside the Lab with RFID

Fordham and Columbia researchers used a UID low-frequency RFID solution to track wild rats at a Brooklyn waste recycling site, showing lab-grade identification technology works in uncontrolled field environments.

Researchers from Fordham and Columbia Universities, using a low-frequency RFID solution from UID, were able to take rodent behavior research out of cages and laboratories and into the field — tracking wild rats at a waste recycling transfer station in Brooklyn, New York.

The project, led by behavioral ecologist Michael Parsons at Fordham University, represents a practical extension of the same RFID identification and tracking methodology used in controlled vivarium settings. The key difference is scale and environment: rather than a rack of home cages, the researchers were working across an active industrial site, tracking free-roaming animals in their natural habitat.

From the Vivarium to the Field

Standard animal research RFID infrastructure — microchips, readers, and data logging software — is designed for the controlled conditions of a vivarium. The Fordham/Columbia study showed that the underlying technology is robust enough to operate in an outdoor environment with variable temperatures, bedding-equivalent substrate (garbage), and animals moving across a much larger physical space than a cage.

Individual rats were chipped using the same subcutaneous implantation procedure used in laboratory studies. Readers were positioned to cover the rats’ common movement corridors. The resulting dataset documented individual rat movements, social interactions, and behavioral responses to environmental stimuli — including the presence of feral cats — over a multi-month observation period.

Why This Matters for Research

Most behavioral ecology studies on rats rely on visual observation or trapping-and-recapturing, both of which are labor-intensive and introduce observer effects. RFID-based tracking removes the observer from the equation and generates a continuous, objective record.

The Fordham/Columbia methodology points toward a broader class of field studies — urban wildlife research, invasive species monitoring, ecological behavior studies — where RFID identification offers resolution that wasn’t previously practical outside a lab.
