What the Study Examined
The white paper details the results of a process improvement project designed to enhance pre- and post-surgical monitoring in cardiac surgical rodent models. The study used RFID-based continuous temperature monitoring to collect objective physiological data across the recovery window.
Key Insights
The study produced three findings with direct implications for surgical study design:
Heat loss during and after surgery. Continuous RFID temperature monitoring revealed that surgical rodents experience significant heat loss during and immediately after procedures. This heat loss was detectable earlier and more reliably with continuous RFID monitoring than with periodic manual checks.
Heat loss affects recovery time. Animals with greater measured heat loss showed longer recovery times. The ability to quantify this relationship — rather than observe it qualitatively — gives surgical teams actionable data for improving recovery protocols.
Species differences in heat loss. Mice experienced greater heat loss relative to body mass than rats. This has practical implications for post-surgical protocol design: the interventions appropriate for rat recovery may be insufficient for mice.
Why Continuous Monitoring Matters
Manual post-surgical welfare checks produce point-in-time data at intervals determined by staffing availability, not by the animal’s physiological state. Continuous RFID temperature monitoring produces a complete record of temperature trends across the recovery window — including nights, weekends, and periods when staff are at reduced capacity.
