URH-2BT — LabScan Reader with Bluetooth
The URH-2BT (LabScan) is a portable, medium-range reader for UID's UC-Series implantable microchips. When connected to a PC via bluetooth or USB, it enters each cage-side read directly into your LIMS or other software of choice.
- ID + temperature
- Types straight into your LIMS
- USB-rechargeable
One Handheld for Cage-Side ID and Temperature Collection
The URH-2BT is the medium-range handheld for small-animal work and is the reader most techs carry between racks and procedure rooms. It connects to a PC via Bluetooth or USB to import data into your LIMS or UID software such as DataCollector, PiSuite, and VivoTraq.
- Reads ID, study data, and temperature — the URH-2BT pulls the animal's ID and all 16 characters of study data straight from the chip, along with temperature if the microchip supports it.
- Medium read range — up to 7.1 cm, enough to scan an animal at cage side without repositioning it.
- Wireless over Bluetooth — built-in Bluetooth sends each read to your computer without the USB cable.
- LIMS-ready — over Bluetooth or USB, the read drops into whichever LIMS or spreadsheet field has focus, just as a barcode scanner types. Serial output is available when your data team needs a direct data stream.
- Sized for small animals — recommended for mice, rats, hamsters, and rabbits.
- USB-rechargeable — the internal battery charges over USB or can be charged via the optional dock accessory.

Common Questions
-
What's the difference between the URH-2 and the URH-2BT?
The readers are mostly the same, except this one has bluetooth capabilites for connecting it to your PC.
-
Does the URH-2BT read temperature?
Yes. When the implant is a UCT-2112 temperature microchip, the URH-2BT returns the animal ID and temperature in a single scan. Other UC-Series microchips return ID only.
-
How does the data get into our LIMS?
Over Bluetooth or USB, using either HID keyboard or serial output. HID is the fastest option: the read drops into whichever field has focus, just as a barcode scanner types. This approach works with LIMS, Excel, and most lab software without special drivers. The URH-2BT also supports serial output over the wired USB connection.
-
What does it pair with?
Standard Bluetooth pairing to your computer, which sees the URH-2BT as a Bluetooth keyboard, so each scanned ID lands in whichever input field has focus. No drivers to install.
-
Does it still work if Bluetooth is unavailable?
Yes. USB-to-PC capture works exactly as it does on the wired URH-2. You can move between Bluetooth and USB on the same reader as the workflow demands, and the same data — ID and, where applicable, UCT-2112 temperature — lands in the receiving system either way.
-
Which animals do you recommend it for?
The URH-2BT is recommended for mice, rats, hamsters, and rabbits. For larger species or reads through cage bars, step up to the URH-300HP.
-
Can I program microchips with the URH-2BT?
No. The URH-2BT is read-only. Programming chips before implantation requires a UBS-200L or UPS-60 paired with UID's PiSuite Provisioning Software.
-
Will it read chips from a non-UID source?
The URH-2BT is designed for UID's encoded low-frequency format and works with every chip in the UC-Series line. If you're consolidating animals from a non-UID source and aren't sure which format those chips use, contact us before ordering so we can confirm compatibility.
-
How does this relate to the UBT-500 Bluetooth Dongle?
The UBT-500 is an add-on that brings Bluetooth to UID's high-power handhelds, such as the URH-300HP. The URH-2BT doesn't need it — Bluetooth is built in. If you're standardizing on the URH-2 form factor and want wireless, this is the SKU to order.
