One Handheld for Everyday Microchip Scanning
PetScan is the medium-range handheld for exam rooms, treatment areas, and the front desk. It reads TraqPaw plus standard chips from other clinics, shelters, and rescues, and connects to a PC over USB for direct entry into your records.
- Reads across brands — scan TraqPaw and other ISO-compatible pet microchips with the same reader.
- Medium read range — up to 7.1 cm, enough for routine chairside scanning.
- PIMS-ready — the number drops into whichever PIMS or spreadsheet field has focus, just as a barcode scanner types.
- No special software — use the systems already open on your PC.
- USB-rechargeable — charge with the included cable or set the reader in the optional dock.

Common Questions
-
Is PetScan the same as the URH-2 ISO?
Yes. PetScan is the clinic name for the ISO-configured URH-2. The SKU shown on a quote is URH-2-ISO.
-
Will it read chips from other manufacturers?
Yes. PetScan reads TraqPaw and other ISO 11784/11785-compatible tags, including compatible tags from other clinics, shelters, and rescues. If your practice still sees older non-ISO chips, contact us so we can confirm compatibility before you order.
-
How does the number get into our PIMS?
Over USB, using either HID keyboard or serial output. In HID mode, the number drops into whichever PIMS or spreadsheet field has focus, just as a barcode scanner types. Serial output is available when your IT team needs a direct data stream.
-
Is PetScan compatible with Mac?
Yes. PetScan works with Mac computers in both HID keyboard and serial modes. HID mode works without an additional driver. To use serial mode, download and install the Mac driver manually.
-
Does PetScan require special software?
No. In HID keyboard mode, your PC treats PetScan like a keyboard, so there is no separate scanning application to learn.
-
How is PetScan different from the research URH-2?
PetScan is configured for the standard microchip formats used in veterinary care. The research URH-2 is built for UID's UC-Series research microchips, including temperature reads from the UCT-2112.
-
Which reader should we use for larger animals?
The URH-300HP-ISO adds longer read range for cattle, equine, and other larger species where the chip may sit deeper.
