Animal identification is essential to ensuring the success of any preclinical study requiring the use of animal models. Early individual identification of mice is particularly important for maintaining data integrity throughout the course of a research study — but identifying animals at or near birth has historically posed technical challenges.
Implantable RFID microchips are ideal for this application. They offer a permanent, electronic, and simple method for positive identification of animals as small as neonatal mice.

Studies involving genetic models, transgenic lines, or developmental timelines often require individual identification of animals well before the standard implantation window used in adult mice. Toe-clipping and ear-punching, the traditional early-identification methods, have welfare implications and are increasingly restricted under institutional and regulatory guidelines.
RFID-based identification starting from the pre-weaned stage offers a path to permanent, compliant, electronic identification from the earliest point in the animal’s research life.
