1.4 x 8.5 mm FDX-B PIT Tag

The 1.4 x 8.5 mm FDX-B PIT tag is the smaller option in UID's fish and wildlife lineup, with less volume than the standard 2.1 x 12 mm tag. Encapsulated in biocompatible glass, it carries a unique 128-bit ID and scans reliably with UID ISO readers. Designed for fish, amphibians, and small mammals where a 12 mm tag is too large.

A Small Tag for Small Species

At 1.4 mm in diameter and 8.5 mm long, this tag allows implantation in species that have historically been too small to mark individually — juvenile salmonids, small-bodied amphibians, shrews, lizards. The tag has less volume than the standard 2.1 x 12 mm tag.

The biocompatible glass capsule and passive design keep the implant profile low and the animal's welfare impact minimal. No battery. No maintenance. The ID persists for the life of the animal.

Common Questions

  • When should I use the 1.4 x 8.5 mm tag instead of the 2.1 x 12 mm?

Use the 1.4 x 8.5 mm when body mass or implant site is the limiting factor — juvenile fish, small amphibians, or any species where a 12 mm tag would compromise survival or retention.
