Why RFID?

Less Handling, Stronger Data, Better Animal Welfare

RFID is implanted once and readable for the life of the animal. Every scan is a handling event that never happened.

  • Permanent ID

    The RFID stays with the animal through every room move, cage change, and study transition. No re-identification mid-study, no fixing a worn tattoo or replacing a missing ear tag.

  • 3Rs Driven

    Toe-clipping and ear-punching carry welfare costs that IACUC increasingly asks teams to justify. A touchless scan — cage-side or via a home-cage monitoring solution returns the ID (and temperature) without handling the animal. Less handling, better animal welfare.

  • Better Data

    Handling affects animal data. Reducing restraint events reduces that variation. Cleaner signal, fewer confounds to explain in the methods section.

  • Temperature at ±0.1°C

    Temperature implants return ID and core body temperature together — validated to ±0.1°C. A single scan adds a thermoregulation endpoint without a second device, a second restraint, or a second entry on the protocol.

Most teams are scanning their first cohort within a week. Here's how.

  1. Microchip

    Match the chip to the species and study. With a wide range of sizes to choose from, select the chip that's right for your study and endpoints.

  2. Injector

    Choose an injector for your workflow. We offer reusable injectors for cannulas or disposable options for one time use.

  3. Reader

    URH-2 handheld for cage-side scans, UBS-200L desktop scans, or Bluetooth enabled options for either.

  4. Scan, Record, Repeat

    Every read returns a unique ID straight into your study record.
