Product Overview

Individual Tracking in a Group-Housed Cage

Mice live in groups. They move, compete, and huddle, and most of what you need to measure happens after the lights are off. Mouse Matrix monitors them in the home cage, tracking body temperature, locomotor activity, and zone location for up to five animals per cage, without separating or handling them.

Because every animal carries a unique ID, the data stays tied to the individual. The read method requires no light source, so Mouse Matrix works through the dark phase when rodents are most active.

Setup in Three Steps

From Microchip to Dashboard

  1. Implant the Microchip

Implant the UID UCT-2112 temperature-sensing microchip subcutaneously. Each chip carries a unique animal ID and supports ±0.1°C body-temperature accuracy based on UID validation testing against rectal probe reference measurements.

  2. Slide the Plate Under the Cage

The reader plate sits beneath the cage and polls its antenna zones continuously — every mouse, every zone transition, every temperature read. No rack modification, no light source, no extra hardware in the cage.

  3. Open the Software

Mouse Matrix App streams temperature, activity, and zone data per animal every 100–250 ms. Watch live dashboards or export to Excel for analysis with no separate ingestion step needed.

Key Capabilities

Built for Per-Animal Data, Around the Clock

Every design choice traces back to one goal: accurate, individual-level data from group-housed animals, with as little disturbance as possible. Less handling means cleaner data and better welfare.

  • Temperature + Activity in One System

Body temperature, locomotor activity, and zone preference for every animal in the cage — collected together, time-stamped together.

  • 100–250 ms Sampling

Sub-second polling catches the brief zone transitions and short activity bursts that slower sampling rates miss.

  • 5 Mice per Cage, Individually

Up to five group-housed mice per cage, each tracked by unique ID. Social groups stay intact, so you don't have to single-house animals just to tell individuals apart.

  • 24/7 Through the Dark Phase

Rodents are most active after lights-off. Monitoring runs continuously through the dark phase, capturing the active period without adding light to the room.

  • 6, 8, or 12-Zone Plates

Match the plate to the study: 6- and 8-zone for mice, 12-zone for rats and other larger rodents.

  • IVC + Static Cage Compatible

Thin-profile plates fit high-density IVC racks (including Innovive InnoRack) and standard static cages — no rack modification required.

Mouse Matrix Questions

  • What does Mouse Matrix measure?

Individual animal ID, body temperature to ±0.1 °C, locomotor activity, and zone location for up to five mice per cage, with each zone scanned every 100–250 ms.

  • Does Mouse Matrix work in the dark phase?

Yes. It reads RFID microchips rather than video, so it needs no light source and records through lights-off, when mice are most active.

  • Do I have to single-house animals?

No. Every animal carries a unique microchip ID, so up to five group-housed mice per cage are tracked individually and social groups stay intact.

  • Which cages and racks does it fit?

Static cages, IVC cages, and high-density racks including Innovive InnoRack. The thin reader plate slides under the cage with no rack modification.

  • Can I use it for rats?

Yes. 6- and 8-zone plates suit mice; the 12-zone plate is sized for rats and other larger rodents.

  • How does Mouse Matrix support animal welfare and the 3Rs?

It supports refinement. Temperature and activity are collected without handling, restraint, or separating cage mates, and the continuous per-animal record gives IACUC documentation objective, time-stamped data.

  • Can I rent Mouse Matrix for a single study?

Yes. Rental starts at two plates for three months and includes the controller, PoE switch, software, installation, and training. Purchase is available for long-term deployment.
