URH-1HP

The URH-1HP is a wireless handheld reader that has medium range, and is a high power scanning device to read encoded data from all UID microchips.

  • Reads ID + temperature
  • USB + Bluetooth
  • 5.5 - 7.1 cm read range

The Reader That Goes Where the Animal Is

The URH-1HP covers general lab work where the operator is mobile: cage-side scans, dosing checks, sample collection, etc. It can also be connected to a PC via USB or wirelessly via bluetooth with our bluetooth dongle.

  • Works like a barcode scanner — the reader types as a HID keyboard, so each read drops into whichever LIMS, spreadsheet, or dosing-log field has focus.
  • Temperature in the same scan — the reader also supports temperature reads from UID microchips that have temperature on them like the UCT-2112.
  • Wired or wireless — pair over Bluetooth with the bluetooth dongle to scan cage to cage, or stay wired over USB at the host PC.
  • Ships as a working kit — reader, rechargeable Li-ion battery, and the UBC-i4 charger in one order.
  • Built for rodent work — mice, rats, hamsters, and rabbits; SC implants across species, IP for mice and rats.

Common Questions

  • Should I pick the URH-1HP or the URH-1L?

Read range is the main difference. The URH-1HP reads at 5.5–7.1 cm using a separate round antenna head; the URH-1L reads at 4–5 cm from a single flat body. Pick the URH-1HP when you need the extra standoff distance, or the URH-1L for the more compact unit and its continuous or single-scan modes on long sequential scan sessions. Both read all UID UC-Series microchips including the UCT-2112 temperature chip.

  • Does it read temperature microchips?

Yes. The URH-1HP decodes temperature data from the UCT-2112 temperature microchip alongside the ID. The reading appears on the host as ID and temperature value, sent over USB or Bluetooth.

  • How does the reader get data into our LIMS?

The reader presents as a HID keyboard, so each read is typed into whatever field has focus, such as LIMS, spreadsheet, or dosing log, the same way a barcode scanner does. No driver install needed, no custom integration.

  • USB or Bluetooth, which connection should I use?

USB if the reader sits next to the host PC and you want a wired, no-pairing path. Bluetooth if the operator is moving around a procedure room or cage rack and the host is a few feet away. If you already own a URH-1HP and want to add the UBT-500 Bluetooth Dongle, whether it works depends on the reader's firmware revision. Send us the serial number and we'll confirm compatibility before you order.

  • Can I program microchips with this reader?

No. The URH-1HP is a microchip reader. Programming requires a UBS-200L base station or UPS-60 paired with UID's PiSuite Provisioning Software.

  • Which animals is it recommended for?

Rodent work: mice, rats, hamsters, and rabbits, with SC implants across species and IP for mice and rats. For larger species, where the chip sits deeper, we recommend the URH-300HP high-power handheld.
