Temporal and Space-Use Changes by Rats in Response to Predation by Feral Cats in an Urban Ecosystem

Parsons, M.H., et al. 2018

Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution

Summary

This field study used cameras and identified urban brown rats to measure how feral cats changed rat behavior at a New York waste facility. Across 306 videos there were only three predation attempts and twenty stalking events, yet rats were less likely to appear when cats were present and shifted toward shelter; they remained abundant rather than being controlled by predation. UID RFID microchips linked observations to individual rats.
