A Preoptic Neurocircuit That Modulates Metabolic Flexibility

Roessler, Julian M., et al. 2026

bioRxiv

Summary

This study identified torpor-associated glutamatergic PACAP neurons in the anteroventral preoptic area as a central controller of fuel selection in mice. Activating the neurons rapidly shifted whole-body metabolism from glucose to fat by producing transient skeletal-muscle insulin resistance, partly through corticosterone, while silencing them improved glucose tolerance, revealing bidirectional brain control of metabolic flexibility. UID UCT-2112 microchips tracked temperature changes.
