Versatile, modular, and customizable magnetic solid-droplet systems

Sun, et al. 2024

PNAS

Summary

This engineering study introduced reconfigurable miniature robots assembled from structural bodies and magnetically controlled ferrofluid droplets. The building-block approach produced systems from 0.8 millimeters to 1.5 centimeters that could combine and independently control locomotion, gripping, sensing, and other functions by exploiting droplet fusion, fission, and magnetic response. A UID UCT-2112 wireless temperature sensor was incorporated as a functional payload.
