Modification of the dextran sodium sulfate model to identify agents that induce or exacerbate inflammatory bowel disease

Johnson, Victor J., et al. 2026

Journal of Immunotoxicology

Summary

This study adapted the dextran sodium sulfate model to screen environmental agents that may worsen inflammatory bowel disease in female C57BL/6 mice. Seven days of 2% DSS produced mild colon inflammation that largely resolved within three weeks; a high-salt diet alone caused little damage, but combined exposure markedly intensified inflammation and delayed recovery. UID UC-2112 programmable microchips provided individual animal identification.
