Fentanyl activated carotid-body nerves through abundant kappa opioid receptors even as central mu-receptor effects depressed respiration; a kappa agonist stimulated breathing and reduced fentanyl-induced respiratory depression in rats with intact, but not denervated, carotid bodies.
