A Novel Scoring System for Humane Endpoints in Mice with Cecal Ligation and Puncture-Induced Sepsis

Ferguson, et al. 2023

Comparative Medicine

Summary

This study developed a visual humane-endpoint score for male and female C57BL/6J mice with cecal ligation and puncture-induced sepsis. Respiratory status, activity and stimulus response, and eye appearance showed strong observer agreement and distinguished survivors from nonsurvivors; activity-response and eye scores were especially predictive of imminent death. UID UCT-2112 temperature transponders and a URH-1HP reader added an objective temperature measure.
