This study tested whether recovery from mild-to-moderate SARS-CoV-2 infection makes K18-hACE2 mice more vulnerable to a later Parkinson's disease-related toxin. Neither infection nor a normally non-lesioning MPTP dose alone caused dopaminergic neuron loss, but the sequential exposures produced substantially greater substantia nigra neuron loss and neuroinflammation, suggesting a lasting sensitization to oxidative stress.
