What Is Pet Microchip Registration?
Pet microchip registration links your pet's microchip number with their details and your contact information in a registry.
- The Microchip ID: The unique identifier of the chip in your pet. Here's an example: 968 100000174197.
- The Contact Info: Information about you and your pet so you can be contacted if your pet is lost. Examples include Fluffy, Bob Smith, and 123 Main St.
- The Registry: The company that stores the record linking the microchip to your contact info.
UID (a pet microchip supplier) has partnered with Pet Registration and Recovery (a registry) so every TraqPaw chip purchased is automatically registered to the clinic purchasing the chip. At worst, your pet is linked to your vet, who can then reach out to you.
How a Microchip Helps a Lost Pet Get Home

Start with your pet's microchip number and the registration instructions from your clinic. Keep the registry record current when your contact details change.

Is my pet registered automatically after microchipping?
Not necessarily. Ask your clinic what it has submitted, then confirm your pet's record and contact details with the registry. Having a microchip implanted does not by itself confirm that owner registration is complete.

Does clinic pre-registration replace owner registration?
No. A clinic association identifies the practice; owner registration adds the contact details needed to reach you. Keep your details current with both the registry and your clinic.

How do I find my pet's microchip registry?
Start with the microchip number and your registration paperwork. The AAHA lookup can identify participating registries to contact. It does not display owner information or enroll your pet.

Does pet microchip registration cost money?

How do I update my contact details?
Update the registry holding the record. Tell your clinic too; updating its patient record does not necessarily update the registry. If you have adopted a pet, ask the registry about its transfer process.

Ask your clinic or chip provider which registry to contact, then complete its enrollment process. No match in AAHA's lookup does not prove that no registration exists: the tool searches participating registries, so confirm directly with your pet's registry or provider.
