Pre-Registered Pet Microchips for Veterinary Clinics
TraqPaw microchips arrive pre-registered to your clinic. Keep the chip number in the patient record, then help owners complete their registration.
What Is a Pre-Registered Pet Microchip?
For TraqPaw, pre-registration means the microchip number is associated with the purchasing clinic through Pet Registration and Recovery (PRR) before UID ships it. It gives the registry a practice to contact if the owner's registration is incomplete.
- The clinic association: Connects the chip number to your practice.
- The patient record: Connects that number to the pet and owner your team knows.
- Owner registration: Adds the pet and current owner contact details to the registry.
How TraqPaw Registration Fits Your Clinic's Workflow
Make the handoff clear at each stage. Confirm the clinic association, keep the number with the patient, and explain what the owner still needs to complete.
Before Use
-
Your Clinic Orders TraqPaw
Order directly from UID or through your distributor. Provide the purchasing clinic's current details.
-
UID Pre-Registers and Ships
UID associates the chip numbers with your clinic through PRR before shipping to your practice. Distributor orders are also shipped directly from UID.
At the Appointment
-
Record the Microchip Number
Follow your practice's implantation and scanning protocol. Match the confirmed number to the patient record and included barcode labels.
-
Give the Owner the Card
Check that the registration card carries the same number. Explain that the clinic link and owner registration are separate steps.
With the Owner
-
Complete Owner Registration
The owner follows the supplied PRR instructions, reviews the current terms, and adds their pet and contact details.
-
Confirm and Keep Current
The owner checks the saved registry record and retains the confirmation. Changes to contact details should reach both the registry and the clinic.
Clinic Pre-Registration vs. Owner Registration
Use this checklist when assigning responsibilities. Recording a number in your practice software does not by itself submit the owner's details to the registry.
| Record | What It Connects | Who Checks It |
|---|---|---|
| Clinic pre-registration | Chip number and purchasing practice | Clinic with UID or PRR |
| Clinic patient record | Chip number, patient, and owner | Your clinic team |
| Owner registration | Chip number, pet, and owner contacts | Owner with PRR |
| Future contact updates | Current details in both records | Owner with registry and clinic |
Keep the Card and Patient Record Connected
Each TraqPaw unit includes an owner registration card and adhesive barcode labels. Provide the owner the registration card and use the barcode labels for your internal records.
- Match the number: Compare the scan, barcode labels, and card before the owner leaves.
- Keep the clinic record: Record the microchip number with the patient and the owner's current contact details.
- Explain the next step: Show the owner where the card directs them to register and what they need to confirm.
How the Clinic Pre-Registration Can Help
The below example explains how a lost pet is reunited should the owner forget to complete the registration
-
The Registry Is Contacted
After a scan and registry lookup, the receiving clinic or shelter contacts PRR about the chip number. PRR can identify the associated practice.
-
Your Clinic Checks Its Records
Your team searches for the exact microchip number in its patient records. A matching record is needed to connect the chip to a pet and owner.
-
Your Team Tries the Owner
With a matching record and current contact details, your clinic can try to reach the owner. An outdated number or missing record can leave this route incomplete.
Pre-Registered Microchip Questions
-
Are pre-registered pet microchips registered to the owner?
Not through clinic pre-registration alone. For TraqPaw, that step associates the chip number with the purchasing practice. The owner still needs to follow the supplied registration instructions and confirm their pet and current contact details with PRR.
-
What should we check when a box arrives?
Confirm the purchasing practice and chip-number association with UID or PRR before use. If you ordered through a distributor or stock is moving between locations, ask UID to confirm the correct clinic association for those numbers.
-
Does entering the number in our PIMS complete registration?
No. Saving the microchip number in the patient record does not by itself complete owner registration with PRR. Treat the clinic record and the registry record as separate checks in your handoff.
-
What if the owner does not register?
The clinic association provides a safety net. Your practice may be able to help if it has a matching microchip number in the patient record and current owner contact details. Encourage owners to complete registration so the registry can use their details directly.
-
Does AAHA's lookup show our patient's contact information?
No. AAHA's lookup identifies participating registries and their contact information. It does not display owner details or confirm that those details are current. Contact the registry holding the record.
-
Do TraqPaw and TraqPaw Micro use clinic pre-registration?
Yes. Both are supplied with clinic pre-registration through PRR. Compare TraqPaw and TraqPaw Micro for their product specifications, then confirm the registration handoff for your practice.
